The island of Madeira usually has sunny weather with about twelve hours of sunshine during the day in summer, and about nine hours in winter. There are sunny days of up to 20º all through the winter season with some days of cloudy cooler weather around 16/18º. However, the mountainous regions continue to remain cooler for even longer periods of time and when it snows in the mountains, it cools down the temperature in general.
The winter months from October to April can sometimes be wet, especially at higher levels, and there can be overcast skies and occasionally turbulent weather. Intermittent periods of good weather with mild to cool temperatures can also be anticipated. Summers, between May to September, are mild to hot with temperatures between 22ºC and 32ºC.
The average winter temperature is 18°C and the summer temperature is 26°C. Typically, the south is sunnier than the north of Madeira. The mountain regions are misty and stand a greater chance of rain.
A sub-tropical climate governs the pleasant island and guards it against extremes, making it the ideal holiday destination all round the year. The odd shower and brilliant blue skies that characterise Madeira keep it fresh and green with lots of flowers.
