Carnival in Madeira

During Carnival in Madeira, the streets of Funchal are decorated with bright motifs and invaded by carnival music. For the children it is a special treat to dress up and all sorts of characters are to be seen walking the streets at this fun time of the year. However, it is not only children, but all who like to have a bit of fun join in!

Carnival is celebrated around the island with intense animation, which shows the true characteristics of the Madeiran people, with joy, happiness and colour.

The celebration of Carnival parades are divided into two, the allegorical and the "Free for All." The allegorical procession takes place on Saturday evening in the main streets of Funchal. It involves several groups, with thousands of extras that bring music and contagious rhythm to all who attend this show. The procession of Trapalhão occurs on Tuesday afternoon, filling Funchal with a lot of fun. This has the spontaneous invitation of all the public interested in participating.
