Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Ecotourism is the main focus of activity for Quinta Splendida Wellness and Botanical Gardens.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
Why not engage in a complimentary guided tour through the abundant gardens of a property rich in Portuguese agricultural history and have the opportunity to taste organically grown produce? The botanical garden at Quinta Splendida stretches over 30.000 sq m and the layout seen at present is the original one created by the owner's design in 1990. The Garden has over 1.000 plant species of which 650 plants are labeled. There is a team of six gardeners to maintain it. A large variety of species as well as endemic plants grow naturally ensuring that there is continuous flowering throughout the seasons.
The Botanical Garden of Quinta Splendida supplies the wellness center’s restaurant with organically grown parsley, oregano, mint, garlic, onions, fennel, lettuce, cabbage, and tomatoes from the garden’s "Kitchen Garden" section. Guests can attend a complimentary, weekly guided tour of the gardens and see the abundance of organically grown produce as well native and international flora on the grounds of what used to be an important sugar cane mill production area for Aguardente (sugar cane brandy), Poncha (local Madeiran spirit), and then later Madeiran wine. Seeds are naturally harvested and the gardeners often give some away to guests to be taken home. This property has an original wine cellar with weekly local Madeiran wine tasting.
