Caring for Destination
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Cultural and environmental factors have made walking one of Madeira's most traditional and popular open-air activities.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
The Levadas are a remarkable, ingenious irrigation system. These channels are testimony to our ancestors' gigantic efforts to bring water from the high mountain springs to the slopes and valleys. There are around 1,400 m of Levadas in Madeira ready for you to explore and discover breathtaking landscapes.
This Levada is in the Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO Heritage Site.
Visit Madeira's indigenous forest, the same which João Gonçalves Zarco and his companions found when they reached the island in 1419!
Madeira's natural heritage has been singled out in Europe, thanks to its amazing richness, diversity and state of preservation, which is due, in part, to the Madeira’s respect for their natural heritage. On the December 2nd, 1999, UNESCO has recognized this and declared the Laurissilva Forest a World Natural Heritage Site, the only one in Portugal, which now belongs to all humanity.
