Caring for destination
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
We focus on the historical and cultural past of Madeira by offering guided tours which help guests learn about the unknown aspects of the place and its people.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
We focus on the cultural and historical aspects of the place and the people.
At Nun's Valley, you will have the opportunity to see how the locals live. You can learn about their customs and traditions. Some bars offer local liquors (homemade).
At Monte, you cannot miss the opportunity to go down on the famous sledge ride (the toboggan). Madeira is the only place where you can have this experience.
The toboggan sledges appeared around 1850 and were originally used as a means of fast transport between villages.
They are no longer used as everyday transport by the locals but they do attract thousands of tourists every year. This makes for quite an exciting ride when speeding through the small, snaking streets down to Funchal.
Guests are requested to let the operators know whether they would like to be picked up from their hotels, the main road or from Avenida do Mar hotel's bus stop (near Galerias São Lourenço).
