Bela and Viriato Menezes
Casa das Hortensias was originally the home of Bela (the current owner) and her husband who now live nearby. Bela is a school teacher and Viriato is a pensioner. Together they run the place, personally attending to the public relations, giving a personal touch. Attention to detail is of the utmost importance.
Bela and her team make jams from the fruit on the property to be served at breakfast. They also bake their own cakes. Don't be surprised if, in the middle of the afternoon, you are served with a complimentary piece of homemade pie or cake!
Fruit grown on the property is also often served at breakfast.
Preserving the local handicraft of embroidery, and flora.
Casa das Hortensias, originally the home of Bela (the current owner) and her husband, is a typical home restored and converted into a rustic rural hotel. The house is full of charm, with pure Madeira embroidery, stone walls and flowers, wooden beams, fruit press and traditional balconies which offer a superb sea view. The house is decorated with a variety of local arts and crafts. Bela herself has painted the flower motifs in the bathrooms; the bed linen is hand embroidered (a special craft in Madeira) as are the place mats and napkins in the main house.
