As religion plays a major role in the lives of local Madeirans, churches dot the region and there are regular religious festivals held frequently. Christmas and New Year are key occasions here; New Year particularly is a fabulous occasion when quite a few cruise ships dock and participate in the mind-blowing fireworks show (The Island won the Guinness world record for the largest fireworks display 31st of December 2006). The main local language spoken here is Portuguese — but it is difficult to pick up this language in a short time. However, English is in wide use in Funchal and along with the helpful and pleasant nature of the Madeira people, it makes it relatively easy to overcome any simple problems you might face while visiting the island. Madeira’s sister island, Porto Santo lies to the northeast. Getting there takes 15 minutes by air or two and a half hours or more by sea. Porto Santo is well known for its nine kilometre long sandy white beach and many Madeirans frequent it on holidays. Madeira does have beaches too, but most of them have black sand or pebbles, while the sandy white ones are man-made! Mountain views are visible from all Porto Santo accommodation options but you could also choose from a large number of hotels in Porto Santo which offer both sea and mountain views. With around 40 weekly flights being offered from the UK to the island during the peak season, Madeira's reputation as one of Europe’s unique secret resorts may soon change.
