Olá & Welcome to Madeira & Porto Santo Islands!
Considered the Pearl of the Atlantic, Madeira Island in Portugal is a breathtaking island rising dramatically from the sea, and can be easily reached from any city in Europe in a relatively short time. Madeira is one of those rare destinations where you can mix a holiday on the beach with one in the city or in the mountains. With magnificent mountain views, spectacular coastlines, waterfalls, gorges, beautiful coastal villages and quaint Madeira hotels, this island retreat of Portugal is a marvel to be enjoyed by eco-visitors of all ages.
Along with its sister island, Porto Santo, Madeira is the perfect destination to rejuvenate, refresh and cleanse one’s mind and body from the stresses built in day to day life.
Most island visitors make their base in the capital of Funchal, which has a large number of Hotels in Madeira to ensure a comfortable Madeira Holiday! The town is encompassed by mountains on three sides and offers wide avenues and charming red-roofed and whitewashed buildings. It is also renowned for numerous museums and its Art Deco architecture and there is much to see and do in Madeira.
There is no dearth of parks and gardens in Funchal, ideal for visiting on a tour in Funchal. The town’s beautifully maintained botanical gardens should not be missed for apart from a terrific range of trees and plants, you can enjoy picturesque views of Funchal itself.
Funchal has important festivals throughout the year. Special mention must be made of the carnival week in February, as well as the flower festival of Madeira and the New Year celebrations where a spectacular firework display takes place across the city and on the cruise ships that come in on New Year's Eve and stay till New Year's Day.
There are a number of authentic Funchal hotels to choose from to suit any budget or taste. You can even use our Madeira map to choose your hotels on Madeira Island based on its location.
As religion plays a major role in the lives of local Madeirans, churches dot the region and there are regular religious festivals held frequently. There is always a celebration or Madeira event on at some time or the other in the year in almost every village. Christmas and New Year are key occasions here; New Year particularly is a fabulous occasion when quite a few cruise ships dock and participate in the mind-blowing fireworks show (The Island won the Guinness world record for the largest fireworks display 31st of December 2006). It's a great start to your travel in Madeira Island, Portugal!
The main local language spoken here is Portuguese — but it is difficult to pick up this language in a short time. However, English is in wide use in Funchal and along with the helpful and pleasant nature of the Madeira people, it makes it relatively easy to overcome any simple problems you might face while visiting the island. We offer some excellent rates for Madeira Island Holidays!
Madeira’s sister island, Porto Santo lies to the northeast. Getting there takes 15 minutes by air or two and a half hours or more by sea. Porto Santo is well known for its nine kilometre long sandy white beach and many Madeirans frequent it on holidays. Madeira does have beaches too, but most of them have black sand or pebbles, while the sandy white ones are man-made! Mountain views are visible from all Porto Santo accommodation options but you could also choose from a large number of hotels in Porto Santo which offer both sea and mountain views. With around 40 weekly flights being offered from the UK to the island during the peak season, Madeira's reputation as one of Europe’s unique secret resorts may soon change.
